Everyday listening
When a podcast isn’t the background you want
Try something without a conversation to follow when you want company but don’t want another set of words.
You can save the episode for later
A podcast can be enjoyable and still be the wrong companion for the thing you’re doing. If you keep missing a sentence and rewinding, pause the episode. It will be there when listening to it is what you actually want to do.
Try Waves or quiet Rain instead, or spend a few minutes with no added audio. You aren’t choosing between good and bad backgrounds. You’re deciding whether you want a story, a conversation, a sound, or silence during this particular moment.
Pick the kind of company you want
Nature audio can be almost unnoticed or something you listen to closely. Start with one sound and see which role you want it to have. Add Birds if you enjoy a few details, or keep the simpler water layer if you want less to pay attention to.
If you keep visiting the controls, the mix may be becoming another thing to follow. Simplify it before trying a new playlist. The useful choice might be plain Rain while you work, then the podcast when you can actually enjoy the conversation.
Keep them for different parts of the day
You don’t have to replace everything you usually listen to with nature sounds. A short background session can fit between a programme you enjoy and a quiet stretch without either. Keep the choices separate enough that you can tell which one you want.
Pause the mixer before returning to the episode so you aren’t listening to both by accident. If you save the nature combination, give it a name that describes what plays. That leaves it available for another ordinary moment without asking it to compete with the podcast.
