Everyday listening
Rereading an old favourite with Rain
When you already know the story, a familiar book and a small rain background can be all the setup you want.
Pick the book you actually feel like opening
An old favourite doesn’t have to be the book you think you ought to reread. Choose the one whose first few pages you want today. Try Rain quietly once you’ve sat down, and let the book take over before deciding whether the mix needs anything else.
You may already associate the story with a place or a season. The audio doesn’t need to recreate it. A plain rain layer can simply be a background in the room while the setting on the page does its own work.
Don’t score the experience
If you notice the sound more than the sentences, lower it or pause. If you like how it sits underneath the reading, leave it alone. You don’t need to decide whether you read faster or absorbed more to know that you enjoyed a few pages.
Adding Stream or Forest is an option, but compare one addition at a time. It’s easy to build a detailed atmosphere and then spend the chapter listening to the atmosphere. The smaller version may be what lets the familiar story become the main thing again.
Keep your place in the ordinary way
Use a bookmark, finish the paragraph you’re on, and stop when you want to stop. A main-mixer timer can pause the audio after a selected duration, but it isn’t a reading target. Reaching the end of a chapter isn’t a requirement either.
Save the sound combination if you expect to use it again. You can give it a book-related name, but keep a clue about the actual layers. Next time you may want the same book with a different background, or just the quiet room.
