Why the same mix can feel different on headphones and speakers

Compare your actual listening setups and make separate favourites when one set of levels doesn’t suit both.

Compare what you hear, not the numbers

A slider at the same position can give you a different experience when you move from laptop speakers to headphones. Your device volume, the room, and the playback equipment are part of the setup. Treat the saved levels as a starting point rather than an exact match between devices.

Start quietly after switching equipment. Listen to one layer before restoring the rest of the mix. This makes it easier to notice whether the whole output needs adjusting or whether one particular sound has become more prominent.

Give each setup its own balance

A quiet Stream underneath Rain might be hard to notice on one speaker and very noticeable on your headphones. Change the individual level if that balance bothers you. If every layer feels too loud together, use the overall speaker control instead.

You don’t need to make the two setups identical. Perhaps you like a detailed Forest mix at the desk and plain Rain from a speaker across the room. Keep the versions that work for you rather than forcing one set of numbers to serve both situations.

Make the saved names useful

Names such as “Headphones: quiet forest” and “Speaker: rain” make choosing easier next time. Remember that saved combinations are stored in the browser where you created them. Another device won’t automatically have the same library, even if it uses the same kind of headphones.

Keep a short note of the layers if you move between devices often. Then adjust by listening when you recreate the mix. Matching the room and what you’re doing is more useful than trying to copy every slider position exactly.
